Benefits of external wall insulation

  • Minimal risk of cold spots that cause condensation and mould because EWI can be applied as a continuous covering without gaps. Unlike lining the walls internally, the insulation does not get interrupted at partition walls and floor junctions.
  • Excellent draught-proofing and air-tightness, also thanks to the coverage being continuous.
  • Relatively little disruption to occupants during installation (although some services may need to be temporarily cut off and re-connected).
  • No loss of floor space internally to rooms.
  • Spruces up the exterior of bland looking buildings and can transform shabby exteriors, e.g. giving unloved tower blocks a new lease of life.
  • A new exterior finish means minimal future maintenance.

PROVING EXTERNAL INSULATION WORKS

By taking a before and after thermal picture using our state of the art infra red thermal imaging camera we are able to demonstrate both the reduction in heat loss – ie an improved U value in the walls – and of course the reduction in carbon emissions as well.

Is external wall insulation right for your home?

A quick sense-check before you send photos. If most of these fit, start with your Eircode — we will flag anything that needs a closer look.

  • Home built and occupied before 2011 (SEAI insulation grant rule)
  • Solid or poorly insulated external walls — or a whole-surface wrap is needed
  • Walls in reasonable condition, with no unresolved damp or structural issues
  • Access around the property for scaffold and a continuous external finish
  • You can locate your MPRN and apply through the SEAI homeowner portal

FAQ

Common questions

Straight answers on quoting, suitability, appearance, timing and grants.

How do I get a quote without a site visit?

Start with your Eircode on our quote page, answer a few questions about the property, and send photos of each elevation. We review the outside from those photos and come back with a quotation.

How much does external wall insulation cost in Ireland?

Cost depends on wall area, finish, services, access and grant tier. After your photo enquiry we provide a project-specific quotation. SEAI grants of up to €8,000 may reduce the net cost for eligible homes.

Is external wall insulation suitable for my home?

EWI suits many Irish homes with solid or poorly insulated walls, but suitability depends on wall condition, damp risk, access and planning. We flag anything that needs a closer look during the photo review and survey stage.

Will EWI change how my house looks?

Yes — in a good way. You choose render colour and finish as part of the specification. Sills, vents and details are planned so the wrap looks intentional, not bolted on.

How long does installation take?

Most domestic wraps take about one to two weeks on site, weather permitting. Scaffold, ventilation cores and service adjustments are planned in from the survey.

Who applies for the SEAI grant?

The homeowner applies through the SEAI portal and selects Energy Retrofit Ireland (contractor ID 17645). Our grant roadmap walks through the full sequence — application, approval, works and drawdown.
